Mountains

The mountains have steep slopes. The top of

a mountain is called a peak. There are high

mountains in the northern part of India.
These are the Great Himalayan Mountain
Ranges. It is the highest mountain range

               in the world.

Mount Everest (in Nepal) is the highest
peak in the Himalayas. It is also the highest Mt Everest

peak in the world. Most of the peaks remain under snow almost throughout

the year. There are low mountains and hills in the southern and central
parts of India. The Vindhya and the Satpura mountain ranges are in the
central part of India. The Nilgiri hills are in the southern part. These

mountains and hills are not covered with snow.

A large number of rivers originate in the mountains in India. The Ganga,

the Yamuna, the Kosi and the
               Brahmaputra rivers originate in

               the snow-covered Himalayas. The
               Chambal, the Betwa, the Son

               and the Narmada originate from
               the Central Highlands.

                                  Plains

A large part of our country has
flat and level land. These areas

are called the plains. A vast plain
area is towards the south of the

               Himalayan mountain ranges.
Most of the rivers coming from

               the Himalayas flow through this
plain area. The rivers bring fertile

soil with them. Thus the northern
               plains are suitable for producing

a large variety of crops. Physical Map of India
