Read the sentences.

1. We are friends. 2. I am in Class 2.

We’re friends. I’m in Class 2.

The highlighted words are short forms of the words in bold.

When we join these words, we remove some letters. We use an apostrophe (’)

in place of the missing letters.

We often use short forms of words in spoken English.

Examples:

 he is — he’s  she is — she’s

 they are — they’re  you have — you’ve

 we have — we’ve  let us — let’s

 are not — aren’t  cannot — can’t

 do not — don’t  does not — doesn’t

 will not — won’t  is not — isn’t

 she will — she’ll  we will — we’ll
