Division As Successive Subtraction
Sonia had 6 marbles.
She gave 2 to Raghu.
Now she has 6 – 2 = 4 left.
Now she gives 2 to Deepak.
Now she has 4 – 2 = 2 left.
Now she gives 2 to Anita.
Now she has 2 – 2 = 0 left or no marbles left.
Sonia was distributing marbles 2 at a time.
The number of marbles with her was getting subtracted by 2 each
time.
She could give marbles to three children. After this she was not left
with any marbles.
6 – 2 = 4 (2 is subtracted first time)
4 – 2 = 2 (2 is subtracted second time)
2 – 2 = 0 (2 is subtracted third time)
From 6, if 2 is subtracted 3 times we get 0.
We say 6 ÷ 2 = 3 (6 divided by 2 is 3)
A. Fill in the blanks.
1. 12 – 3 = 9 (3 is subtracted first time)
9 – 3 = 6 (3 is subtracted second time)
6 – 3 = 3 (3 is subtracted third time)
3 – 3 = 0 (3 is subtracted fourth time)
We say 12 ÷ 3 = . ( divided by is )
