These organs work in close cooperation with one another. Let us study
about them.

The General Assembly

The General Assembly is the main organ,
which is like a parliament. Every member

nation has at least one representative in it.
The General Assembly meets at least once

in a year. Each member nation has the
right of one vote in the General Assembly.

The Security Council UN General Assembly

The Security Council works for international peace and security. It has
five permanent members and ten temporary members. The permanent

members are USA, Russia, UK, France and China. The term of every
temporary member is only two years. These countries are elected by the

members other than the permanent members.

The Secretariat
The Secretariat is the administrative body of the United

Nations. It carries out the day-to-day work of the United
Nations. The Secretary General, appointed for five years,

is the head of the Secretariat. He is the most powerful
person in the United Nations. (Vijayalaxmi Pandit was

the first Indian woman to become the President of the
UN General Assembly.) At present, Antonio Guterres is

the Secretary General of the UN. Vijayalaxmi Pandit

The Economic and Social Council
The Economic and Social Council has 18 members. It works under the

General Assembly and looks after the programmes related to social work,
education, health and culture. It looks into the issues relating to human

rights, equality of women, trade relations, etc.
