Answer the following questions.
1. What is the extent of Temperate zone?
2. In which season does rain occur in Prairies?
3. Which river flows through American Prairies?
Life of People
The farms are very large in size and the farmers along with their families
live on the farms. Some workers also live on farms. There are separate
sheds for cattle and machinery. Most of the work on the farms, such as
ploughing, sowing, reaping, threshing and winnowing, is done by large
farm machines. The surplus production is stored in the silos. The farmers
are rich due to large production.
The western part of the Prairie
grasslands is hilly and less fertile.
The cattle are reared in the open
grasslands. The cattle are reared
mostly for meat. The very large cattle
grazing areas are called ranches. Near
the cities, dairy farming is more
popular. The milking of cows is done
by machines.
Ranch
Beef is the staple diet of Americans.
Thus, most of the beef produced is consumed locally. Chicago is an
important centre for slaughtering cattle. Very few people live permanently
in the Prairie region, because most of the farm work is done by the
machines.
The Prairie region is also rich in mineral resources, such as lignite, coal and
petroleum. The main industries in this region are ore crushing factories,
petroleum refineries, flour mills and meat processing and packing units.
The modern science and technology helped the people in improving their
lifestyle, which is mainly controlled by the climatic conditions.
