                                   The Present Continuous Tense

        Read these sentences.
              1. Birds are eating fruits.

              2. I am looking at the birds.
              3. You are throwing the ball high.

              4. She is watering the plants.

All the highlighted words are in the present continuous tense. We use the present
continuous tense to express an action that is happening at the time of speaking. For a
verb in this tense, we write: am/is/are + main verb + ing.

         REMEMBER

We use the present continuous tense to refer to an action that is in progress at the time of
speaking. But when we refer to an action that takes place repeatedly or very often and is not
necessarily happening at the time of speaking, we use the simple present tense.

For example: He brushes his teeth before taking a bath.

                                                                                                               13
