MATHS LAB ACTIVITY • Experiential Learning

Objective: To express a five digit numbers on abacus

Requirements: A five pin spike abacus; nine beads each of yellow, blue, red,
green and black colours; and a pack of number cards.

Instruction:

1. Pick a number card from the pack.

2. Read the digit at one’s place. Put as many red beads on the spike
marked ‘O’.

3. Read the digit at ten’s place. Put as many yellow beads on the spike marked
‘T’.

4. Read the digit at hundred’s place. Put as many blue beads on the spike marked

‘H’.

5. Read the digit at thousand’s place. Put as many green beads on the spike
marked ‘Th’.

6. Read the digit at ten thousand’s place. Put as many black beads on the
spike marked ‘TTh’.

7. We have expressed our number.

Suppose the number card TTh Th H T O we picked reads.

4 6 7 3 3

Put 3 red beads on the spike marked ‘O’.

Put 3 yellow beads on the spike marked ‘T’.

Put 7 blue beads on the spike marked ‘H’.

Put 6 green beads on the spike marked ‘Th’.

Put 4 black beads on the spike marked ‘TTh’. TTh Th H T O

8. Now pick another number card and start again.
