Comparing Numbers

We can compare numbers by comparing their digits in hundreds, tens
and ones places.

1. Which is greater 562 or 775?

H T O Let us compare their hundreds digits.

5 6 2 Hundreds digit of 562 is 5.

7 7 5 Hundreds digit of 775 is 7.

We know that 7 > 5.

So 775 > 562 or 775 is greater. Also 562 < 775 or 562 is smaller.

2. Which is greater 982 or 973?

H T O Let us compare their hundreds digits.

9 8 2 Hundreds digit of 982 is 9.

9 7 3 Hundreds digit of 973 is also 9.

So, we compare their tens digits.

We know that 8 > 7.

So 982 > 973 or 982 is greater. Also 973 < 982 or 973 is smaller.

3. Which is greater 742 or 749?

H T O Let us compare their hundreds digits.

7 4 2 Hundreds digit of 742 is 7.

7 4 9 Hundreds digit of 749 is also 7.

Tens digit of 742 is 4.

Tens digit of 749 is also 4.

We know that 9 > 2.

So 749 > 742 or 749 is greater. Also 742 < 749 or 742 is smaller.
